Winter Storm 2004

January 6. We had heavy snow all day, which closed the schools and made travel pretty difficult. That evening the snow turned to freezing rain, and we were treated to a night full of cracked branches and falling trees. At about 4:00 AM, a big tree hit the garage, shaking the house, and we moved downstairs for the rest of the evening.

January 7. As we cleaned up the tree from the garage roof, we noticed a number of holes in the garage and some leaking into the garage. We've put up some tarps and called the roofing company.

January 8. The roofing guy came by, and says they can get to the roof when the snow is gone. In the evening, we regained power, so we can put away the generator.

January 9. The snow is melting, though slowly. We are still getting a little leaking under the tarp, which isn't good for the garage ceiling.

This is not the tree that hit us

But it's about the same size: 80 feet tall or so.

The original mess

At this point, we didn't know that the roof was leaking yet. The snow is about 5 inches deep on the roof.

Quite a Mess

You see where the top branches landed on the other roof. The trunk was about 8 inches across where it hit the gutter.

Some Cleanup

The big hole is right at the top of the trunk. After this we got the chainsaw fired up and removed the trunk as well.

This is what freezing rain looks like close up.
